anyone have a suggestion how to fix a lionel whistle smoke unit on the k4. the one on my santa fee northern has a separate filler hole and works fine but on the k4 it works off the main smoke unit and worked fine at first and now it has stopped. If it is a bubble how do you get it out? thanks in advance for any help.

It does NOT work off of the main smoke unit, there was an addendum to the manual.
You remove the steam dome that the brass whistle is attached to, the fill opening is underneath. Gently get your fingernails under the base of the steam dome, wiggle and pull up, its snug but it will come off.
Lubricating the rubber o ring on the bottom of the steam dome with a little smoke fluid or light oil will make it easier to take on and off.
If you're run it for some time without fluid and the whistle smoke on, you may have to put new wick in the whistle smoke unit before it's going to work right at this point. Hopefully, the wick hasn't been charred enough to disable the unit.

I had a heck of a time removing the dome when I first got the engine. Had to pry it up with a small screw driver. It is still a little stiff even after I lubricated the rubber o ring.
The brass whistle was not in the proper position to re-direct the smoke and had to be carefully bent down to be a little closer to the shell. Now the smoke is re-directed properly.
thanks so much for the andenum. it did not come wit my engine and the manuel says nothing of it. Now it smokes fantastic. All it had in it was what the factory put in and when it run out of fluid it quit and I had no way of knowing it filled there. how did you guys know the flyer was out from lionel?
This issue came up as soon as these k4's were delivered to those that preordered them. Lionel was made aware of the issue and put the adddendum up at their website, obviously where I had gotten it.
Glad you asked and caught it before you burned it up.
I got the addendum when I looked at the product on-line and spotted it.
