My layout will be 5x10' and will be framed with 1x4's. Am considering using either 2x4's or 1x4's in L shape. Would the 1x4 legs be strong enough. Thinking of six legs and want casters for moving layout around. Thanks for any suggestions you may have. Papa.

I would use 2x 4's. Much stronger. Whatever you do, brace the legs.
Ralph,
Two 1x4's in 'L' shape work fine and that is what I used for numerous layouts I built with 1x4's frame. However, for my current layout, which I built out of 2x4's (they were cheaper than 1x4's around here four; no, five years ago), I used 2x4 legs as shown below. NOTICE that the frame rests on top of the leg as opposed to being secured to the frame with bolts or screws, which end up carrying the load.
The brace attached to the leg, which has its lower end cut at an angle to minimize damage to my skin if/when I run into them while working under the layout, extends 3-1/2" past the top of the leg. This protrusion is attached to the frame, and the brace provides additional lateral stability.
Good luck!
Alex
