O scale is 1:48. Easier calculation is this. Divide the prototype size by 48.

Since you probably want to know the length of the model in inches, you can first multiply the prototype size by 12 and then divide by 48.

So a 50-foot boxcar is 12.5 inches (50 times 12 divided by 48).

Huh? Multiplying by 12 and then dividing by 48 is easier than just dividing by 4?

Where n = length of prototype in feet: (12 * n ) / 48 = 12n / 48 = n * 1/4 = n / 4 = length of model in inches. Therefore, as @Boilermaker1 said, simply divide the length of the protoype in feet by 4 to get the length of the model in inches.

Sorry for my lack of knowledge on this point. But when we say a 70 foot car, how long is that in Scale terms.

Hope I said that right.

Well, this is the 3-rail toy trains forum.  Without getting technical if you are asking about passenger cars, MTH advertises their cars as 70’ or 17 1/2”.  Lionel advertises their passenger cars as 72’ or 18”.

By the way, that 1/2” is noticeable.
