I recently bought a number of basket case O scale trains. Many needed grab irons replaced because they were missing or bent up badly. I measured the grab irons on a MTH caboose and it was .035 wire. I hunted for a supply of cheap wire that would work. I found a spool of wire for a wire welder that was mild steel and .035 diameter. It is stiff and a bit springy but works very easily and holds shape well. Best of all it was 99 cents for two pounds!!! Not sure how many feet it is but one foot made 5 missing grab irons so I am calling it a lifetime supply!!! I'll post my rolling stock restorations later. Here is what I bought.

Great idea Dave, I have a 10" spool in my welder now! So I guess I have a few lifetimes! LOL
Great News Dave, can you show use what tools and methods you use to make one?
I keep it pretty simple......
Wire, GOOD side cutters and pliers. Good cutters most important as you need them to CUT and not just squeeze the wire flat. I have made jigs when I need 20 the same....but I didn't need more than 3 alike today so just did it by eyeball.

Dave,
You can get that in TIG version that is straight. You don't have to deal with trying to straighten it. It is also very easy to solder due to the copper coating.

Thanks for that info. The stuff I have is copper coated too.....and it is easy to work with. If I need REALLY straight long length pieces I use the old trick of trapping the wire between to wood blocks and rolling...... works great!
Ok Dave, some of us, or really just me has never heard of the 2 blocks of wood and rolling it. How do you actually do it?

I'll take pics when I have time.......I just take two chunks of 2 x 4, 6 - 10", lay the wire between the two and move the blocks back and forth......this makes the wire nice and straight......did I make it any clearer or just more confused!!!
Nope Dave Perfect, I understand now! Thanks I had never heard of the before!
