My GP20 apparently shorted out while running.  Replaced what appeared to be burned wires but it still will not fire up. Anybody know how to diagnose the circuit board and wiring etc.  Does not seem to be receiving any power.  Lots of wires and wiring harnesses under the hood.  Cannot find a wiring schematic anywhere to help wth diagnosis.  Any suggestions will be appreciated.

I might see more of these than anyone.  Follow the wires from the rollers and ground to the two pin connection on the corner of the board to confirm  power in.   Your board is possibly toast.  Can you tell me where the burned wires went to?   You can use the color of the plugs to explain.   I know all the wires and may be able to confirm where you are at.  I have circled the power in plug.

I didn't know that was the power in plug but i did suspect that was the problem area. How can you test  for the bad PCB board.  Lionel wants 55.00 for a new one  Would not dare send it to Lionel for repair as its already been there 4 times for various warrenty problems  and they are totally incompetent. They could not even diagnose a dead pickup roller.  Last trip for a bad coupler resulted in a dropped and badly damaged engine and then sent back to me un fixed and blaming me for the broken shell, bent railings and broken off ornamental horn.  So forget Lionel warrenty service, its not worth the frustration.

Thanks for your response, you've been very helpful.

If you have power coming into the board and no operation, you are toast.  Do you hear any sound?  I know you tried it in both remote and transformer mode.  When you power the board, do you have any action at the smoke unit?  Before throwing in the towel, drop your fuel tank and check the wiring on the switches and continuity on both sides of the transformer/remote switch.  Hit your speaker plug with your meter and see what you have.  On the power in plug, set your meter to continuity and flip the engine on it's side.  Hit the red wire with one probe and any roller with the other.  Do the same with ground.

Being a Lionel tech I will not comment on anything else.  Feel free to hit my email if I can be of any help to you with troubleshooting.
