Lion Chief Plus NP GP7 update

     I own both the Scale Legacy NP GP9 and the original Lionel GP7, I have not invested in the newer LCP NP GP7, however I was thinking about it, can you post some pictures of it so I can see it.  The Scale Legacy NP GP9 is a great engine and I use it on many of my larger consists, including my military consist.  How powerful is the LCP NP GP7, can it pull 15-20 cars?

   Thanks much for the picture and the video, of the NP GP7 LCP, If you happen to get a larger consist being pulled by it, please post the video.  In the video using a CW-80 Transformer and only 12 Volts to power the layout was not a good idea however.  His problems with having to start and restart was because of under powering his layout.

Nice picture and video. I had a LC+ GP9. It ran great for quite a while. Then it started blowing the fuses on my PW-ZW. I had 10A fuses between the transformer and the track that popped quickly at the first sign of trouble. That got fixed. Then it ran good for a short time and then just stopped running. No power at all. At that point I got my money back and moved on. I enjoyed it when it ran. I had bought it from a club member who is in the LCCA. It was from their store in Illinois. He said they had problem with it out of the box. Lionel fixed it, but because of that I was getting it at a decent price. He had no problem taking it back. I haven't given up on LionChief +. I'll see what I find at York. I have my eye on a NW2 and maybe a FT AA. Here's a picture of the GP9.

One thing that disappointed me just a little about the scale version is that Lionel made the yellow stripe running down the frame sides way too thin. No idea why they did that. The prototypical engines had a broad yellow stripe, which the LionChief version has, which is better looking, IMHO.

Lionel did very well with the NP GP7 paint as I found an old photo on the Internet that is a perfect match. The Road Number was used by Northern Pacific shows someone from Lionel did their home work. These locomotives are still offered at Train World. I will put up a video having the locomotive pulling as many rolling stock that will fit on the layout and at the fastest speed where it will not fly off the table. As someone said it pulls very well. It has a very good smoke unit as well.

Incidentally, Trainworld isn't showing any available, that I can see.

Just checked again at Train World first page of 64 items under Lionel, Diesle, O guage.

That reference shows a LionChief engine, not the scale version.

Interesting to note that NP GP-9 no. 317 (one of the scale engines Lionel did) did not have the prominent bell on the front roof, at least at this time.

Great pictures you found! Your layout looks really cool. Mine is just a 5 x 8 one level. Just got back into trains a year ago. I have a small collection of stuff and been learning what is out their. Only have 1 scale locomotive the rest is the traditional. This is one reason I went with the Lion Chief Plus. Years ago when I got into trains there was no legacy and other high end stuff. I really like seeing everyone's layout. It is amazing what is out there.

Gentlemen,

   I do not know how many different versions of the NP GP7 & GP9 were actually produced.  I own both the original Lionel GP7 Black & Gold with the red trim striping and the new Scale GP9 more yellow and Black with the prominent Big Bell.  I really like them both!
