I see this engine comes with "maintenance free" motors.  Is that just a fancy name for a can motor?  Also, are these motors flywheel equipped?   Need to know before I decide to purchase a passenger set.

Regards,

Yep can motors. They are maintenance free because they can't be maintained and are not repairable. They should have a long life if treated properly though. Lionchief engines do not have flywheels or at least the ones I have don't. Most (if not all) of the Lionchief Plus and Lionchief 2.0 engine will have flywheels.

Lionel doesn't make any LionChief F-3s. You may be thinking of the LionChief FT engines. Pretty much all DC can-type motors from all the manufacturers are described as maintenance-free motors. They aren't designed to be taken apart and repaired (like the older AC motors were), as H1000 states, but rather are just replaced if they malfunction. I only have LionChief Plus engines (which have cruise control), and every one of them has flywheel-equipped motors.
