I am very upset with the reliability and durability of the one of my  # 77 crossing gates.

It was purchased by my dad in 1930 and has been operated ever since except for a few years during WW II and 1960 to 1963.

It was operating tonight and just stopped and the arm fell and stayed down after the train passed. I pulled it from the layout and found something I would not have imagined in a million years. The arm's Crankshaft was broken in the middle. On further inspection it I found the crank was worn down from constant use and the magnet finally pulled hard enough on the weakened crank arm to break it into two pieces. I am going to call Lionel Management and confront them about their defective product. Imagine a toy breaking after only 82 years of use. I also think that they should pay for a new gate, as it couldn’t be my fault. I looked in the original box for maintenance instructions but couldn’t find any. What next?  Will I have to replace the brushes in all the motors? Replace all the cloth cords on my Transformers? Enough is enough! I’m not going to stand for this atrocity!

I don’t know, after WWI things at Lionel have gone down hill in the durability department. I’m just beside my self.

Is anybody else having these durability issues?

Brakeman,

Ya I can understand your anger, only 82 years old and broken, Lionel should be

held accountable for this no doubt about it, had one of my fathers Lionel 711 switches, that came with his original Tin Plate 263E train set, fail this past year, good Lord it was only just over 100 years old, Lionel needs to replace both my switch and your crossing gate, the nerve of some American Companies and their orginal American made products.  Wish like heck all the new Lionel stuff was made  with this kind of quality, and in America again.  The young boy with the Lionel PE that would not function at Christmas time, really shows the difference in the over all quality, all my Lionel trains in the 50's and 60's ran perfectly right out of the box at Christmas time.  The young boy will never forget his brand new Lionel train failed the Christmas it was given to him.   Not a good thing for Lionel, you can believe that.

Brakeman,

Now that was just plain nasty, heck the return shipping price alone for an old 711 Lionel switch is probably more than the original purchase price of the switch.  Now if you wanted to drive down here and over haul the old 711 switch for me that would be just fine.  The 072 Lionel switches are nice but the old 711's were better.  Course they took some serious power to run.

Merry Christmas everyone

A pair of the original Life Time Warranty Lionel 711 switches, that still work perfectly even today, it was a shame about having to repair one of the other originals, but it has been used hard for many many years.
