I just bought a 1033 transformer from Ebay and it does not appear to come with the actual wires that connect to the track.  Where would I get  these?   I could not find them on Ebay or elsewhere.  Although I imagine connecting them is fairly simple, is there a reprint of the transformer's instruction sheet available somewhere?

The transformer does not come with wires attached.  Are you wanting to know how to connect the binding posts so you can control the train speed, or how to connect transformer to run accessories?. Or both?

The instruction sheets are on line and I am sure some one will provide a link to original instruction sheet packed with transformer.

One thing to remember is the 1033 transformer U post connects to the center rail and provides the variable voltage.  Other multi handled Lionel transformers (LW, ZW etc) had U as the common  that connected to the outside (ground/common) rail.  Confusing??

Attached is a scan of the original instruction sheet for the post-war Lionel #1033 transformer.

The original instructions show the center rail connected to either post A or B and the outer rails connected to post U.   This is OK if you are using only this transformer on your layout.  But as RRMAN posted, it is not correct for a multi-transformer layout.  So if your layout is more complex and you are using more than one transformer disregard those wiring instructions and see the diagram on page 2 in the attached scan of the 1965 Lionel Operating manual.

Instruction Sheet for Lionel #1033 Transformer

Thanks for the suggestions.  I'm new to Lionel (thus the newbie questions).  I bought the 1033 since it originally came with my 2032 Erie Alco with the1467W cars and I want just the basic set up at this point. I will be using the 1033 exclusively for the foreseeable future and only used to control the train speed, no accessories.

I also wanted to know where to buy these connective wires too.  May they be found at any train store (internet or otherwise) or are they proprietary so that only Lionel would sell them?

You don’t have to use wire from Lionel.  You can buy wire at your local hardware or home improvement store.  Buy 18 gauge or larger.  Do you have a lockon which is that piece that connects the wire to the track shown in the second figure in the 1033 instruction sheet (I’m assuming you’re still using the original track that came with your set)?

Great information, thanks.  I do not have a "Lockon" but actually that's the part I was thinking about when I asked the question (along with what wire to use).  My boyhood Marx train had a "Lockon" so I'm familiar with it but I was not sure Lionel used the same component.  I just saw one on Amazon for about $3.50 or will pick one up at my local train store.

I am expecting to use the original track too but I understand that contemporary Lionel "Fastrack" will work with my Alco too.
