I have my family's Lionel 027 Babe Ruth set with the 1666 2-6-2 engine, plus over a 100 ft of additional track, 5 sets of switches, and crossings I added from the Red Caboose's Lionel redealer over the years. My wife lets me and the children take over the living room floor for a month every Christmas. This year it was sluggish when I set it up. Tested the 1041 transformer and only got 15v, not 18v. Borrowed a reconditioned 1041. Tested 16v like it is rated for and increased the train performance by 9% - better but still not up to par. So it looks like something happened to the 1041 in storage since last year. No one will touch the transformer. Looking for ideas.

 

BTW, I keep the train cleaned and lubricated and shop it for repairs as needed (pickup shoes, reverser unit,etc). Also keep the rails clean. Also use lockons every few joints. My transformers test was performed on a 72 in circle with only the transformers swapped to eliminate other influences.

The 1041 is a small 60W (input) transformer that only has 45 or so watts of available output power. As @ADCX Rob stated, your switches alone consume all that power. Excessive draw over time causes heat and can break down the coil explaining the degraded power output. The LW offered by @M. Mitchell Marmel would be quite the upgrade at 110W input 80W+ output.

I'd be more than willing to take a look at the 1041, but cost of shipping and any parts would quickly become economically unreasonable (despite us both being in NYS).

The Allentown First Frost Meet (meets twice a year Spring and Fall) is a good place to get a new transformer.  At that show is a guy that sells reconditioned transformers - Harry Lutz.  He always has a table full of ZWs, Kws, TWs etc.  He offers a two year warranty on all he sells.  I bought a reconditioned Z from him 2 years ago.  He does great work.  If Allentown is not too far a drive, it may be worth going to that show and getting some new power.   He also buys old transformers.  He may offer you something for the one you currently have.

Could be old age. I ran a lot of hard hours on it since I was a kid 50 yrs ago and then my father before me. You anywhere near Albany, NY?

The 1041 is a solid transformer but really only good for running the train by itself, not all the turnouts and extra lamps.  My Father's set from 1948 has this transformer and other than a new cord, it still does duty under the Christmas tree every year.  I agree it sounds like its time to upgrade to a LW or larger transformer.  The LW is a nice one, the dial is lighted which is nice when running in the dark.  Also has nice large buttons for direction and whistle.  Mike the Aspie
