This engine produces both whistle and stack smoke. Whistle smoke syncs with whistle sounds, but stack smoke only pours out smoke with no fan or chuffing sounds. Lionel service has a smoke fan control pcb vision steam part 691sfc1101-p part for $42.50 that seems like it might solve my problem! I do not mind buying this part if it is likely to solve my problem. Any advice will be appreciated! Phil

Check the wiring closely, the serial data winds it's way through the boards to get to the drawbar IR sender. If a wire is pinched, it can take out the new SFC in a flash. If you're not getting chuffing or the fan, but you have proper speed control, it sounds like the serial data is compromised somewhere along the path.
John: Thanks for reply. All wiring seems to be orderly and in tact. But when I applied power on my workbench whistle sound and smoke still worked but now no smoke at all from the stack. I did remove the fan for stack smoke and it works ok by itself. Assuming no wires are compromised, would you get the cfc board from Lionel as the best option or have someone more skilled fix it. Is the fact that Lionel still stocks this part any indication that they fail overtime. Phil
Well, that's the board that controls both smoke units, so it's a likely candidate. I've see a few of these boards fail, but you never know if someone has a pinched/grounded wire or the board just died.
