The loco and tender have been in Missouri for a while needing some TLC from James "windupguy" Pekarek. The motor was missing the whistle, which also acts as the governor. Without it, the loco just takes off and goes airborne. James devised an add on governor that can be removed if I should ever find a whistle assembly. For the first time in many years, the set is runnable.

A huge thank you to James.

Steve,

Sweet Looking Set! (or is the word, Sick?) What's the difference between your 1548 and the clock work 1588? I've been searching for some time now. I located the gun metal four wheel 1588 tender late last year. I feel like a rat or opossum after what I've gone through. See Below:

short story: A now former friend has both complete black & gray sets. He picked up a third 1588 "basket case" that he did not need. Knowing just how hard and long I've been searching for one. I offered what seemed like a king's bounty and was laughed at . After all these years (many) I refer to him as a former friend. Which he will stay .

My thanks to Steve for his patience... that beautiful locomotive was here at the house for quite a while!  It was a fun project, I was glad to get it runnable again.  Since Lionel clockworks are uncommon to say the least, I took the opportunity to pose Steve's 1588 with my own Torpedo... which is in much worse condition, and powered by a Marx motor:

The challenge was to make a governor assembly that would attach to the motor without any modifications or disassembly of the motor.  It also needed to be narrow enough to fit between the front mounting studs.  I ended up using a heavily modified Marx type centrifugal governor, along with some other Marx parts to make an ugly but effective governor assembly.

The parts of the governor assembly:

The governor assembly ready to be mounted to the motor:

Motor with governor assembly in place:

Once the motor is mounted in the body, the governor assembly is pretty well hidden.

I can breathe a sigh of relief now that the 1588 is safely back home!

I know Windup Guy. He fixed my Marx 833 for me. If you have any question or have a problem with a windup toy train, he can tell you exactly how to fix it of he can fix it himself at only the cost of shipping. He also restored my whistling Marx Mercury for me and he did a fantastic job.

I know those torpedoes are EXTREMELY rare. You are very lucky to have one. I am thinking of making a smoking electric version. I hope you enjoy it!
