I'm looking at a prewar Lionel steamer # 1666 and have no experience with Lionel engines. I've added enough flyer prewar passenger cars to my train that my Flyer # 565 cannot pull all of them so I'm looking for a good engine that has some pull power without breaking the bank. Was this a good engine in it's day?? Trying to decide between this engine or a Flyer # 561 engine to haul my train....

Coincidentally, I spent some of today reviving a postwar 1666.  Rather than a wore out piece of trash due to lack of lubrication this one was covered in so much dried up grease and oil that the brushes seized to the commutator.  It now runs like a watch.

If you're not too particular, consider the prewar 224 also.  Basically the 1666 predecessor with the same outward look as the 1666 but beefier mechanicals.  Also labelled as "O" instead of "027".
