Lionel 1688E reconnecting a rebuilt e unit to a 1688 motor | O Gauge Railroading On Line Forum

When I disconnected the eunit from the 1688e motor I didn't take pictures to remember the way it was wired. In looking at a typical wiring diagram, the blue and yellow wire of the eunit are attached to the brushes. The green is attached to the motor field and the pick up wire from the roller or slider is connected to the eunit drum. However on the 1688 motor there is only solder point for one of the brushes, but there are two places on the motor field that had wires soldered to it. What am I missing?

On this engine one of the brushes is grounded, the other connects to the field. The field switches polarity on this motor, not the brushes.

Look closely, I believe you will see where one of the brush plate screws makes contact with a small bit of metal tab on the brush holder to ground it.
