Lionel 182 Crane from AC to DC motor or just replace AC motor?

All,

I am in process of repairing a lionel 182 crane. I knew the motor was dead (just by looking at it), so I need a motor to power the crane. I was wondering though if a DC motor may be used to power this crane. Has anyone done this? I did try to purchase a 165m-1, but was defective. A "brand new" replacement is very expensive, but maybe worth it. Your advice is much appreciated. Thanks
