Hi Guys,

I recently purchased the Lionel Hudson J-3A  (1961460) and everywhere i see it has beautiful smoke from the tender , mine? not so much it was tested by the dealer before i purchased it and claims it worked great now i barely get any smoke out at all, really trying to avoid sending back to the dealer for repairs as shipping back and forth would put me way over limit for the locomotive, i can send it to Lionel but was also told horror stories on how long it took to get back, also afraid to open it to check as it would void the warranty any ideas would be helpful

Thanks John

Owning the Visionline Niagara, I can ell you number 1 you better have added a LOT of fluid. No kidding, this is a large smoke unit and due to the remote location of the filler neck on mine, taks boh patience and understanding of how the fluid has to flow to fill the smoke unit.

Second part is, like any unit with a hose or duct can get a drop of fluid blocking the output.

Last, these are thermistor based Legacy design smoke units, and while I cannot claim to understand how and what the logic is doing with that temperature sensor, what I can say is, drop rack power for several seconds and apply again, and the cycle runs hotter resistor temp for the first couple of seconds.

In the Niagara, the tender also had to be moving, not still for water scoop effect to function.

I think your poduct number is off? Anyway, found a relevant manual it it's similar to the VL Niagara.

1931460?

I think that is wrong it takes way more than 20 drops on first fill. Not unlike most modern dual smoke front units.

Best if you angle the tender to help the fluid flow in.

Thank you gentleman I do have the tender moving and did put smoke fluid in and if you add them all up it was somewhat over twenty, which when I called the dealer stressed to me it to overfill it

I will have to try the track power lower that’s high again thanks it’ll be a day or two till I can get back to it I’ll let you guys know if any of it worked

thanksnagain
