I was looking to pick up the 96 SSS - the Lionel Steel switcher & 2 ore cars & probably the add on car. Anyone have any feedback on this set? How doe the engine run, etc. Looks like a cool little set

A friend owns this set and the little switcher runs like a typical PW one, noisy but it runs well. He hasn't has any trouble with his.
I have the set, bought new when released. Good runner but it is a Vulcan growler.
Cool. Thanks for the info guys. I figured it would be a bit on the noisy side. It's TMCC equipped, correct ?
I doubt it has TMCC given the tiny engine size and the era.

I feel like the early post LTI era gets overlooked a lot of the time. They made some good stuff early on, based on the postwar style but updated with modern electronics.
There was also a separate sale add on diecast ore car for the set that appeared in the same catalog.
Quite pricy at the time, I think it listed for $150.

Dang! I just noticed the list price for the engine & 2 cars - $500!

Yup! Overpriced by today's standards of more scale details, etc....
But I think some of the early TMCC infusion into PW style classics was some of the best stuff.
I picked up one of these sets a few years back, think I got it for a little less than $200 with the add-on car. While it has TMCC, it doesn't (to the best of my recollection) have any sort of Railsounds (really no room for it).

One only has to look at the traditional style GP-9s and and GP-7s made by Lionel in the late 90s to see that. Equipped with TMCC and RailSounds, strobes, and updated fuel tanks and other details, these were produced to provide widespread introduction of command control and RailSounds to O gauge, among other things. Bulletproof engines, fine runners, and, to this day, some of the best sounds made to date. With their lowered stance and large fuel tanks, they also looked great, sitting lower and more realistically than most engines made before or since.
This is one of my favorite sets. Also one of the first big purchases I made when I got my first job. I agree, a lot of the LTI gets overlooked. I’ve been buying some of the other sets from the same period.

There are a few of the Vulcan switchers that came with TMCC.
It was Lionel’s first motorized unit with TMCC. It did not come with ElectroCouplers though the 59 Minuteman announced afterwards did. No RailSounds, just the growl of the Pullmor.

I actually just picked up the NYC 2380 set from that same year this week. Still sealed in it's OB. From all the videos I've seen, the sounds seem great

And there is a brand new CAB-1 in the box with that set too!
