At $2,500 a pop and a minimum order of 40 units, that’s a big ask for a single shop. Perhaps one of them will throw some bait in the water during the preorder period, but I’m guessing preorders will have to come real close to the minimum before the trigger gets pulled. Getting stuck with a few leftovers would be very expensive at this price point.
Just a comment, the Hobo sound cars are up to $209.99 catalog price. However, the thing that really caught my eye, specifically calling out plastic figures.
From the 2021 catalog Vol 2, Hobo sound cars $189.99, but specifically calls out 2 pewter figures. http://www.lionel.com/products...unds-boxcar-2226010/
The $20 difference is one thing and really, are you surprised? But just wondering, the change on the figures from pewter to plastic and what was or will be really delivered on the 21 catalog cars (22 VS 23).
A rail journey to "Parris Island" via the USMC FA2 AA set + USMC caboose for me...

You and 39 of your best train friends could have the locomotive of your dreams! Perhaps you can start a thread proposing this locomotive and see if there is any interest?
@Norm Charbonneau posted:I think they did good with the L1s. I am in on the 1369 with the Trainphone antenna and the 1343. Local preorder price is very appealing. I think these are going to look awesome doubleheaded. Glad they offered non-sequential cab numbers.
Yep! I agree. Chicken or the egg. Your post or my notes. I was reading about the L1s in Alvin F. Staufer's book, Pennsy Power, this morning while waiting for the catalog to drop. Who knew? Would have been nice to see cab 1752. Also, like two N6Bs.

Huh? I have no interest in it. So, you’re back to 40.
I was merely responding to your suggestion that it should be a dealer custom run. It’s a $100,000 project given the price point and minimums - not an easy task.

Well its too big for my layout! But I am interested in seeing what uncatalogued cars and locomotives get proposed by Mr. Muffin or Public Delivery Track or Pat's Trains. I am sure that there are others who may do so as well.
I like the Santa Fe Autorack set.
I noticed that if I must buy it, it would have to be a pre-order item from Charles Ro.

It's interesting to read comments on some forums from folks who already have 50-100 locos and 100-300 freight cars complain about there being nothing of interest (seriously) in the catalog. Different strokes for different folks. If for every 10 folks who see nothing of interest there is one person who orders 10 locos, it evens out .
This may be the first time I ever pre-order, and would be the first Lionel product, outside of track, I'll purchase since....the 90s?
Anyway! I'm interested in the WM Hagerstown Fast Freight Set, but the price for what it is, kind of keeps me away. The one I really have my eye on is the Strasburg #89 in 2000s scheme has my eye. It, and some of the passenger cars will actually fit the curves on my layout and would be pretty sentimental. So, I think I'm going to place a pre-order and in the meantime, start chasing down some of the older or MTH woodside cars.
The C&O 614 Greenbrier definitely has my interest.... Assuming that this is the old MTH molds, the tender is the "in service" tender and not the modified one from when it was rebuilt as an excursion locomotive. If Lionel could make the modified tender an option, I'm 100% in on it! @Dave Olson ? Any thoughts on doing the modified extended coal bunker tender? Also, any thoughts on offering a proper auxiliary tender to go with it?
Excursion tender (reduced water capacity, greater coal capacity):

I was thoroughly surprised by the L1s. I think I'll get a pair, at those prices. That Strasburg N6B cabin is enticing too.
Great catalog in my opinion. I don't have the massive collections many of you complainers do, so it's all interesting to me. I think the L1s is a clear winner
Very good catalog. Interesting new accessories.
Ryan and Dave continue on with the Southern Pacific offerings. Wow!
To be ordered:
SP Mogul (1760)
SP SD-40T - Black Widow
More later....
@superwarp1 posted:Cab3 500 bucks. I'm so glad I'm all set on control systems.
List price, of course. It could have been had for less than $399 if ordered a few months ago.
It's a great option to tie all the systems together. I've been adding LionChief +2.0 locs to my roster and the CAB-3 will simplify operations.
@Tall J posted:and in the meantime, start chasing down some of the older or MTH woodside cars.
$450 MSRP is a bit steep for a 2-car set. You should be able to find the MTH versions cheaper on auction sites.
I have several sets that I've sold recently. Strasburg items are hot right now.
Strasburg 3-car add-on set sold for $455
Strasburg 4-car Nicholas Smith exclusive sold for $500
And I have several more I will be selling. I love these cars and think they are some of MTH's finest work.
Already pre-ordered the L1 #1343 through Charles Ro with discount being fantastic IMHO. I looked up the MTH PS 2.0 version that looked to be produced last in 2007 and list price was $899 so is it possible this loco with Legacy in 2022 is a bargain? Also assuming it will be built in an ex-MTH factory, very happy about that too.
@Fireball RR posted:Also assuming it will be built in an ex-MTH factory,
There is no such thing. It's either STILL an MTH factory, or Lionel moved the tooling they bought.
Again, MTH, still in business, still producing new trains. Lionel and others bought some tooling. Lionel can then under contract use that tooling at a facility, but that doesn't make that facility ex-MTH.

Hmm . Three guys renting an office in Maryland. 😉
sorry but today is Lionel’s day.😁
Nothing for me in this catalog.
I wasn't that interested in most of the catalog, but that Billups Crossing Signal looks like it's high in entertainment value. Hopefully it can be easily modified for other track systems.
Boy, you guys are fast. I just discovered the catalogue an hour ago.
- L&N FA is a good idea, but the color looks really wrong (catalogue art, I know), and Lionel hads ywt to get L&N color (diesels) or lettering (steam) correct.
- Early Challenger is so, so appealing. This was the design, also, that was the basis for the D&H and Clinchfield Challengers (not to be confused with the group of "modern" ex-DRGW Challengers that CRR bought after WWII). I wish that Lionel had done CRR and D&H, but, though essentially the same locos in spec, there were too many external differences, I guess, to justify the work, even with a brass hybrid. I would give serious consideration to an accurate CRR version. And the D&H would have been a real stunner. UP? Maybe....style 1.
I’ll be ordering 2 PRR L1s & possibly an n6b caboose.
#1627 with the green roof, post-war details, & doghouse tender
#1369 with pre-war details & train phone antennas.
these are a very exciting offering for me. Cheers!
Two Legacy steam engines have my attention:
1. PRR L1 1627 Post war version - like the dog house on the tender. Always order the not shown engine.
2. Strasburg Mogul #89 (2000s version) - the only issue is the coaches are going to cost a fortune 😀
So far Charles Ro is giving the best discount at 16+ Percent. Maybe a smart vender will offer 20% to get my money.

I am interested in the Strasburg heavy weight Pequea Valley. Does anyone know it the color matches the Strasburg cars offered in the 2021 catalog volume 2 , 2227030 and 2227040. These were wood coach 2 packs. I realize that the wood coach cars are 17 inches and the heavy weight is 18 inches but are the colors the same?

Amtrack5899,
I would think that Lionel intends the Pequea Valley car to match the wood sided coaches but until they are produced no one can say for sure.
Not everything matches perfectly on a passenger train even Strasburg has cars that were painted a few years apart and the sun has faded the older ones or even a different batch of the same brand of paint can differ from each other.

I agree. The Billups Crossing Signal is certainly unique. Hopefully, Lionel will post a video so we can see the lights and hear the siren.
I really really like the wm set with both liveries, but that’s one expensive set

Nope that was Mr Muffins price
Thanks John B, do you know if either Lionel or MTH made any 18 inch Strasburg heavy weight cars to match this single car? I only remember the wood coaches. It seems strange that they would offer a single car without the rest of the heavy weight coaches. I was also hoping for a Strasburg sound car. Maybe 2023 catalog.
Upon a quick review, I found the catalog very disappointing. Other than possibly a caboose or two, I found nothing of interest. Perhaps that's good with the massive inflation, as the hit on the wallet will be zero to small.

Dealer images of 1627 show a red roof with the doghouse tender for this loco.
I prefer the red, maybe we need clarification from Lionel on these engines "not shown" in the catalog.
I'm guessing the dealer preorder images of 1627 came from Lionel.

To be clear: $499.99 is the catalog (list) price.
Ro has them right now for $450.
If ordered several months ago, the CAB-3 was available for under $399. In any case, they're all backordered until September or so ... and we wait.
Though I don't do scale, ill be getting a Western Railway of Alabama sound boxcar. That's a Southeastern road name you don't see in three rail. Hoping the next catalog has railking tooling E8's in SR.
I'd like #89 CNR, but I have more trains than I can put on my layout. I still have 3 locomotives in the delivery pipeline. I was hoping for something to not be there; C Liner B units and it wasn't. I ordered the A unit and I don't want to commit to a B unit before I see how Lionel did with the A unit.

Atlas produced two different versions of a WR of A boxcars, available from Public Delivery Track.
Was someone asleep at the wheel with the red flag “all new product” on many pages? All? New? The 622-type NW2 from 1949? The LC+ NW2 from about five years ago? The 0-6-0 saddle tank “all” “new”? Standard O boxcars all new? FM H-15-44. Uni-body tank cars. PS1 boxcars. Northeast caboose. Maybe new paint schemes? New features? Not quite “all” new.

Generally "All New" means new paint scheme, other than that there is very little if any detail or feature changes. Even "New tooling" in most cases means "look what we bought from MTH".
While I have not had the best of luck with Lionel pre-orders
I have long wanted to add some Pennsy L1's to my inventory so I am contemplating:
Pennsy L1 # 1343
Cumberland Valley Freight set
and a hobo box car
