Thanks to bmoran4, and the forum info, we're making progress on the Lionel 2026 in question. However, we still haven't solved our original problem - the loco lacks traction with more than a couple cars in tow. Can anyone point us to forum information on how to address driving wheel slippage on this loco? We don't believe it had a traction tire(s). Can anyone confirm? What else beyond cleaning the track carefully can we try to reduce slipping and increase traction, enough to pull at least 4-5 cars? Thanks so much for any help!

If it wasn't obvious, it may help to clean the track. Then look at the e-unit lever and make sure it is solidly engaged.
Lots of advice here on a similar locomotive: https://ogrforum.com/...amer-stopped-running
Thanks for sending back a reply so quickly! We did clean the tracks, and the E-unit seems a little loose. We'll look there next for a likely cause. Many thanks, again!
A loose e-unit or loose e-unit lever can display like you describe. Tightening the mounting screw is straightforward. If the lever is loose and won't definitively engage, you can counteract that with a shim (say a 671M-22) or use a center punch on the rivet, but the proper fix would be to re-rivet the the fulcrum or replace the lever/fiber board assembly.
Thank you, again! The loco has returned home with its owner but we'll be sure to try your suggestions at our next wok session!! Best wishes.
