Recently, I purchased a PW Alco Erie set to fix up for my collection. The main issue with them was the flaking nose decals. There was an older thread about this that expired without any conclusions being reached. What was emphasized in that thread was that the current water slide decals were too light to use singly on the nose. Some people suggested using two. Another option was the adhesive decal. So, I ordered a bunch of water slides and adhesives from Jeff Kane at ttender.com.   I had enough that I could put an adhesive on one of the As and water slides on the other and go with whatever looked best. The adhesive one was a bit darker, but I didn't like the glossy look. As it turned out, the water slides that Jeff sells were not light at all and to me, they were perfect. They also conform better to the irregularities on the nose (door grooves).  Another thing I noticed about the Alco decals (originals). They were very easy to get off as compared with the Santa Fe F3 decals I've replaced. Ten minutes of soaking in hot soapy water and they literally peeled off. Not the case with my F3s

Below is a photo of the new decals....

Thanks, guys.   In fact, Jeff is the one who recommended I get some Alcos to work on. I got a 2023 UP set and then this one. Same motors as the 623 series switchers which are bullet proof and with their cast frames are smooth through switches.    I also add a 5mm LED bulb in a brass tube behind the headlight lens and 2 chip LEDs are put in a groove I carve into the front of the number board so they illuminate the red markers. VERY cool.Postwar Alcos and F3s......great engines

Lionel used several vendors for decals; I have a number of NOS sheets and singles, and most are from Meyercord in Chicago.  I have a sheet of 11 Erie wings for the 2032 nose, and they're from The Palm Brothers Decalomania Co of Cincinnati, Ohio.  All the Meyercord decals I have are covered with a heavy decal film.  No SF F-3 decals here, but the 218 SF Alco FA Meyercord nose decals I own have the heavy film; the film on the Palm Brothers Erie decal is almost nonexistent.  Other manufacturers of Lionel decals I have are from Mastercraft Decalomania of Chicago, and Chicago Decalomania (you guessed it - another Chicago company).
