Working on my engine now and smoker is not working that I can tell.  Ordered some liquid and tested with no results.   From what I've been reading sounds like the smoke unit needs repair or replacing.    So with that How does one remove he shell?   Could not find anything on how to remove it.   Some appear easy and some appear difficult.    Than once I get the shell of I suspect it will be obvious on how to replace but I could use some pointers on that.

Thanks again - so far I've been getting some great advise and appreciate all of it.

To take the shell off, remove one screw on top of the boiler near the cab, 2 screws to take off the ash pan underneath the cab, and two screws to take off the steam chest and cow-catcher (pilot).

The smoke heater element is #671-225. Replace the smoke unit lining #671-212 and stack gasket #671-181 while you have the loco apart.

Cool - always good to confirm.   Was just talking to a older fella that works on these types of trains.   Is indicating that the liquid might not work and suggests I get the pellets.   I saw some on Ebay and will be ordering soon.    There were a lot so I assume it really doesn't matter which kind.    Thanks again for getting me started on this.

Smoke fluid will work in the pellet type unit in the 2046 engine. Most likely when a pellet type smoke unit fails is because the nichrome wire has a break in it , can be rewound counting its wraps first and ordering the wire Traintender had some years back when an order was placed and probably still stocks it. .

If one can solder its easy to rebuild and the wire is very inexpensive.

Traintender also sells the kits to convert pill type to liquid and or the seperate parts as well in the bulk section such as the pac-man, the top cap, insulation for the wire etc.

Good luck.
