I was wondering if anyone had this since it was just released what the specific route they used for the announcment. I already own the El Capitan SS Diner so I was hoping it was something different, was really hoping for the "Super Chief".

But the Big Domes did not run on the Super Chief, right?

The version of the Big Dome Lionel made mostly ran on the all/mostly Budd San Francisco Chief, as I recall.

I never thought of doing that. All my SF passenger cars are MTH as well except for my Stationsounds car of course. I will have to check int into that.

It was so easy, it was sick.  Make a PCB base out of chipboard (cardboard on legal pads), and refasten the soundboard assembly to the chipboard.  Install in an ROO or baggage car.  Remove the Lionel wheel with the magnet and put it on your MTH truck.  It took me about 1 hour with a break in that time.  Use your lights that come with the MTH and leave the Lionel Car lights in the dome car.  When you are done, you will have a lighted dome car and Railsounds in your MTH car.  With the MTH passenger car announcements in the engine, and the sound from the Railsounds, you will have one sweet consist.

FYI, Charles Ro is about the cheapest for Railsounds diners when new.

5C593574-EF83-4F64-92E2-B7101ABCFFEFJust got tracking from Charles Ro, I ordered the big dome, 4pk & coach/ diner 2pk. When these cars were first announced I emailed Ryan to ask what sound set was being put in the dome. He replied more than likely the Super Chief. I simply told him that the SC never carried coaches or a big dome. If he does “The Chief” the train would be much closer to a real Santa Fe prototype. Ryan said that they would put in announcements for “the Chief” I won’t have my set until close to New Year’s Eve. If anyone gets their dome car please share a video :-)

here’s a pic of the obs car that Ryan shared with me. It’s based on the Empire State express tooling but it still looks very nice

That looks nice.  I think there might have been a few months of overlap on the arrival of the Big Domes and the observation cars before they were removed from the Chief and SF Chief.  The SF Chief was mostly/entirely a Budd train, and it had the version of the Big Dome Lionel made.  So, the Lionel train would be fairly representative of the prototype.  The Chief too, but less so.  I am not sure that the "Navajo" would be a correct observation car, though.

Yes this train is pretty close. The only 2 cars that are not accurate is the short dome coach. The super chief used short dome lounges starting in 1951 which were I think Pullman cars. The Najavo obs is not accurate at all for the Chief,  It’s also not a Budd car. However this will still be a very fun train. Can’t wait to try it out!!

in the mid 50’s the chief lost its obs cars and they were converted to have blunt ends with diaphragms to operate mid train on other SF trains. I will consider doing a kitbash to "Najavo” and running it mid train.

Merry Christmas!

Yup. I’m Hoping Lionel does a newly tooled high level El Capitan with their stainless finish, also in Amtrak with a southwest limited sound set in the diner, to pull them. Newley tooled SF fp45’s and Amtrak sdp40f’s

one can dream.........

The Navajo actually was a Budd car.  But I think it was less than 85 feet long.  Maybe 80, 81, or 82 feet?  So it would be a 20" or 20.5" car at most in O scale.  It was originally built for the Super Chief in 1937, I believe, but then ran on other Santa Fe trains in the 1940's, 1950's, and 1960's, after the Super Chief received new equipment.  Golden Gate Depot made it to scale a few years ago.

And of course, the Budd short dome is not accurate for Santa Fe at all.  Otherwise, you have a pretty accurate version of the early San Francisco Chief.  And a somewhat less accurate version of the Chief.  The only other one that would come close are the right combination of K-Line 21" Santa Fe cars.  Golden Gate Depot/3rd Rail made a nice brass version of the Big Dome that ran on the Chief, but they never made any of the other cars, except maybe the baggage, rpo, and some sleepers for the 1951 Super Chief that could fill in.

The '37 SC was an all Budd train and Pullman got so upset they refused to staff the sleepers.  The agreement was they would staff them if ATSF bought no more sleepers from other than Pullman.  And they never did until after the breakup.  It was a big reason ATSF supported the breakup.

It's why the '38 SC has Pullman sleepers and Budd diners, lounges, baggages and RPOs.

*UPDATE*

Mine arrived today and it is "The Chief". Sounds are great and it's on par with the rest of the 21" StationSound cars. The one thing I noticed on all these new 21" StationSound cars is that they never mention the Railroad name and only the name of the route. Not sure if this was a licensing thing or not, but my El Cap says Santa Fe El Capitan in the announcements which I like a lot better. All in all it's a great SF SS car.

I’m glad it’s ”the Chief” and not the SC. I like that the end diaphragms seems silver rather then black. Just one thing..... the finish looks a bit flat. Is that the picture or is the paint flat?

Another disappointment for me from Lionel. I am glad I have learned not to trust the product descriptions in the catalogs and NOT preorder.  I considered myself a supporter of Lionel but they are making it very difficult for me to give them my money.  As a result Scott Mann has gained another customer.  Santa Fe passenger cars simply must have the stainless steel finish advertised.

FEDEX says they attempted to deliver my Lionel 1927010 Santa Fe four-pack on December 27th at 11:12 A.M. and then again on December 28, 2019 at 10:48 A.M.  Three family members were in the house and the driver did not "knock" on the door either day.  I found the two Call Tags on the side door later in the day on each day.  I called FEDEX on December 28, 2019 and was told they would not be re-delivered until Tuesday, December 31, 2019, three days later.  The driver had already returned to the Richfield, Ohio FEDEX Depot by 11:50 A.M., before Noon, over twenty miles away from my Parma, Ohio home.  I guess you can shorten your day of delivering packages if you just slap Call Tags on every door where a personal signature is required.

I will be detailing these passenger cars with Preiser 65602 Unpainted Seater People that I painted, as I have done with all my previous Lionel 21" passenger cars.  I look forward to receiving these cars soon, but at this rate they will go back to the dealer and be shipped back to me by USPS.

My two car set 1927040 arrived from another dealer today by UPS.  The two cars are very nice, even though they are not a shiny metallic finish.  They look like my Empire State Express cars, but with the accordion-style diaphragm that I prefer.

Sincerely, John Rowlen

My Lionel 1927010 Santa Fe 4-Pack arrived Sunday, December 29, 2019 after riding around in the FEDEX truck for three days.  It looks like the box was opened because there are packaging peanuts in the orange Lionel box and all around the four passenger cars.  The orange box was in a larger MTH box for shipping.  It is obvious that my dealer did not pack the trains this way.  The driver who delivered the large shipping box stated that the kids who tried to deliver it on the 27th and then 28th, have no patience to knock and wait for someone to come to the door for a signature.  I heard no knocking on the side door the previous attempts. There was only a call tag.

It is a disappointment after paying $792.00 on Amazon for this four-car Santa Fe passenger set.

Sincerely, John Rowlen

792!? Why pay almost 200 dollars extra....? Most dealers have them readily in stock for far less

That dealer is overcharging by quite a bit then. I can find them easily for $499 plus 30ish for shipping at major Lionel dealers. Some dealers still don't charge tax (even if they should) as well.

I just don't understand why order from Amazon at all, especially at a wild markup. It will all ship directly from the dealer regardless

Have you thought about returning the items to Amazon under the 30 day return policy? And then re-purchasing the items from a reputable dealer and receive outer and inner packaging in pristine condition, and save a few hundred dollars in the transaction?

I appreciate the good information from all who made suggestions.  My buying options are limited because three Lionel Top 10 Dealers refuse to sell to me anymore.  In the past five years I have purchased an obscene amount of new Lionel (over $100,000) and as the odds have it, returned a number of new Lionel items with issues.  Because the items had issues and I returned them, three top ten dealers refuse to sell to me anymore.  My options are limited.  I tried to remind the three sellers that I don't make these trains, I just purchase them . . . expecting a quality product each time.

Many items have had shipping issues as this Lionel 1927010 shows.  It is hard to prove that items may have been tampered with in the past, but I know the seller of this item, have purchased $1,000's from him, and have had excellent service.

The three-day, unexplained delay of this package when I was at home when the shipping company said they tried to deliver it, adds to the question of who opened the Shipping box and shifted the entire contents so that the shipping peanuts were jammed inside the orange Lionel 4-Pack box. There is no way in heck that the dealer would ship it this way. Note that Amazon did not touch this package, it came directly from the dealer.

When I opened the box, the bottom of the 4-pack was already open.  As the orange boxed was lifted, I felt the four cars slide out the bottom.  I stopped and carefully laid the shipping carton on its side and coaxed the orange box and its contents out of the shipping carton. I stood the contents back on end and took this picture.

I will inspect each car for damage.  I will clean the plastic packaging shells for each car.  And I will spend a few hours trying to get the crushed peanuts residue off of the cars and packaging.  The static electric charge makes the debris stick to everything.

If I have to return it, it will be properly boxed and then inserted back in the shipping box.  I refuse to stick the dealer with this mess.  I want this set in good condition for me, or someone else.

 Sincerely, John Rowlen

This is a great post, great Question and nice pictures. My dealer is placing the figures in mine for pickup in mid January, and although the color is not as shiny as the 18 inch El Capitan Cars, it’s fine. It will be mixed in the train and will look ok. I just had all led lighting placed in my 18 inch set. See the rear Observation car.88A5FAF7-A6BA-45BF-A732-7821B408031A

A lot of dealers will charge over to cover some of Amazon's fees. Depending on the items sold Amazon can charge as much as 12-20% of the selling price as their fees. Add that up with shipping, insurance, etc it can kill the margins for the dealer.

This began the legal road for the breakup of the Pullman manufacturing and opetating divisions right after WWII, I beleive.
