As some of you know I have to sell my train collection so I'm starting to get the engines ready.  I put my Lionel 221 on the tracks, it went a few feet sparked and stopped.  It looks like the headlight wire is bare and touched metal.  Anyway, I have to take the shell off, this looks complicated with all of the small linkage on it.  I can't see that well anymore and any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks again,

You probably have this figured out by now, but just in case you don't. I just tried this on my gray 221.

1) Take off the screw that holds the linkage on the middle drivers and slip the spacers and linkages off.

2) Remove the screw on top of the engine, right behind the smokestack. Phillip's screwdriver.

3) Take off the rear trucks with a slotted screwdriver and worm the draw-bar assembly off.

4) Take off the front truck assembly with a slotted screwdriver.

5) Move the motor forward and lift out, working out the light bulb assembly when possible.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Dan.  I was able to get it off.  I had to remove the headlight assembly as the wire as it was badly cracked.  the engine runs very well without the shell on it, I put it back together and it sparked again so something is touching the shell.  When I get the new headlight socket and wire assembly I'll take it apart again.  At least I'm getting practice.

Check carefully all the wires inside the loco for cracks and bad insulation, including the wire going to the contact shoe that picks up the power. Check that the solder connections on the e-unit relay do not touch the shell when reassembling the body. Sometimes the shell is a very close fit to the e-unit connections, and the shell shorts out the power at that point.
