When I run my Lionel 2356 for a period of time the Collector Assembly gets very hot, is that normal? Thank you

Yes they can get hot. The heat builds up from resistance from dirty rollers or track. Give the rollers a good cleaning with contact cleaner and I use a dremel tool with wire wheel to clean up roller. If can find a lubricant called "Neolube #2" its a dry film conductive lubricant and use it on each end of roller you'll be ready to roll.
