Ok, so I experimented.

I switched out the incadescent 14v bulb with a white inverted LED.   Unfortunately, it did not work as I thought it would.  The light did not shine down the lucite tube of the crossing gate.   Not sure if a focused LED would make a difference.

Anyone here  been successful switching it out?

I have a post war semaphore which I would like to try convert only I can't figure out how to take the bulb out.   Also would it be an inverted bulb or a focused one?

Your assistance is appreciated.

Hi GEorge:

The inverted lens LEDs are made to have the light shine out the sides radially by reflecting off of the internal inverted cone. Very little light is emmitted from the end.

A focused lens LED has its lumens focused out of the end where it's very bright. Doing that, there is little light emitted from the sides.

A frosted lens LED will disperse the light out of the sides and the end but the light is difused and not as brilliant because of the frosted body.

If you're using bulbs with an E10 screw base or a Ba9 bayonet base, check out www.trainelectrics.com
