Others have different ideas, but I disassemble the reverse unit, take the plunger out, put the part of the plunger that goes into the coil on an anvil, and give it a couple hearty taps with a hammer. Afterwards, smooth out the part you hit with a Scotchbrite  or emery cloth. Clean it well with alcohol or CRC Electramotive. Mae sure that the slot the plunger's cross piece slides up and down is clean, as well as the area where the drum turns is clean. Clean the fingers where they contact the drum, check the drum to make sure that the pivot that goes into sides of the reverse unit are in good shape, and clean the contact area on the drum while you have it apart. If this is your first, take pictures with your phone or digital camera, to have a reference. You can tell people that have done this frequently by their addiction to scotch and their white hair.
