I am still having problems with repairing my #282 crane, but have not given up. In the meantime I saw a gantry crane, with a railing around part of the cab. I have never seen that before. Was this the way Lionel built them in the very beginning?? Just wondering, like the look.

The Lionel #182 had a railing. It is conceivable that someone took a 182 Cab assembly and mated it with a 282 structure.
Very interesting. And what is surprising is that the deck of the 282 has holes, as if to receive such a railing. Perhaps Lionel decided not to trying to cut costs. Thanks for the insight.

I have added railings to a tender that I customized . I used mechanics wire available at any auto parts store.
The 182 stanchions and railing fits the 282 platform just fine.
