Does anyone know how Lionel packaged the 3413? Is the plunger removed so the car fits in the box? If so, how is it removed?

yes, Lionel armed the plunger and tied a blue ribbon (the kind used to lift engines from their box) around the top of the plunger thru the bottom of the car, preventing it from discharging while in the box

Sounds like a new battle cry.
Constant compression of a spring will weaken it. Storing a spring compressed for years in a box will lead to weak springs and good luck getting a replacement. I try to keep all of my cars on the shelves with the coupler open.
