yes, Lionel armed the plunger and tied a blue ribbon (the kind used to lift engines from their box) around the top of the plunger thru the bottom of the car, preventing it from discharging while in the box
Constant compression of a spring will weaken it. Storing a spring compressed for years in a box will lead to weak springs and good luck getting a replacement. I try to keep all of my cars on the shelves with the coupler open.
