I am awaiting my copy to ship Monday but have a smoke unit question I see they smoke well but are they a straight shot down the stack into the smoke unit chamber or like the NKP 765 off centered?

Yes and no.
The stack takes fluid straight down.
The whistle steam requires removal of the dome (magnetized) and a funnel inserted.
The dome is finicky and must be replaced carefully to be seated in a way to direct the (smoke) steam. Be careful not to push the whistle into the antennae rail or you will lose signal.

Your 765 should be a straight shot as well, if not, its probably misaligned.
Misalignment of the stacks on the scale berks is easy to do if you've taken it apart for anything, some were even delivered from Lionel new that way.
You'll have to remove the four screws underneath, two up front recessed into the underside of the steam cylinders and the two which are the second screw in from the the rear of the cab.
Lift the shell up a bit and try lining up the stack with the opening first,then lower the cab down.

the cap is not that small, you will not have any trouble.
