Hi All,

New member here. I'm fairly new to the hobby. I have bought just a few MTH and Lionel trains now, but the Lionel Pennsylvania Flyer set, given to me as a kid about 15 years ago, was what got me into it. It's not worth anything monetarily, but it has a lot of nostalgic value to me.

The smoke unit on this engine (6-31936) has been a problem waiting to happen; I'm sure I abused it when I was younger, not knowing it needed fluid to be switched on. Anyway, I finally did it in recently, making the whole house smell like burning plastic. I pried it open, and it is melted and burned to a crisp beyond repair.

I cannot find a direct replacement anywhere, as I suspected. S&W got back to me and even they don't have it. The closest thing I can find is the plunger-type unit from the Lionchief  loco (2023120). This engine appears to have the same basic design as mine, so I'm thinking fitment won't be a huge issue. Do y'all think this unit will work? I know a little modification will be necessary, but my main concern is that the new unit is 18 ohms and the original is 16 ohms. The Lionchief runs at constant full voltage, so I'm thinking the smoke unit is designed accordingly in comparison to the old unit meant for conventional running. I'm thinking the 18 ohm unit won't produce much smoke running conventional at low voltages. I cut the lightbulb receiver off my old smoke unit so I can glue it to the new unit (which doesn't have a socket) and solder in the wires.

Much thanks in advance

Yikes,  you were dang serious about that unit being fried to a crisp.   I have one or two conventional smoke units hanging around,  but they are probably plunger driven.  I will take a look in the parts drawers

Sweet! Yeah, it's definitely toast. Mine is plunger-driven, but I removed the plunger and the mechanism to save as parts. That's why they're not in the photos

I only found one.  I believe it's out of the 1976 Broadway limited set.  ( I repowered that loco once,  and I think I moved the smoke unit with the the donor chassis. )

It is marked 236-54.  No idea if the light bulb works.  Take a look at these pictures and let me know if you think it would work.

@jhz563, That looks promising! Super appreciate you digging that up and posting the pics. The only main thing I see different is the presence of that resistor (or whatever it is). I think it will work, let me just do a little snooping and I'll let you know soon.

Chuck, my engine has a wedge bulb headlight like the unit JHZ posted. It is not in my picture because I cut it off the smoke unit so I could at least keep the headlight functionality. I believe my model is from 2005. The light and the smoke share a common ground; the headlight power wire is from the motor tab, and the smoke lead goes to the switch and I'm not sure where it draws from there.
