Not long ago a member named Brent posted some photos of a Lionel 408E in Apple Green. It was in rough shape and he was asking about restoring the engine. All replies were to just clean up the loco as the paint was still too nice to strip off, and the value of the loco would be retained. Brent asked if anyone would want to take a crack at doing the job. I'm not sure how many replies he got, but I didn't see any and kept thinking about the challenge. So I made the offer to do the job, and wrote up an estimate based on what I could see in his photos, and my estimate of the number of hours needed to do the job. Brent contacted the owner who contacted me and agreed to have the loco shipped to me for a good going over.

Both pantographs were sadly destroyed, but replaceable. Both cast headlights were crumbling, and the wheels were shot due to zinc pest. Both motors had little running time on them, but they needed a thorough going over, cleaning, and rewiring, and one of the pick up assemblies needed to be replaced. The body was filthy from years of dust and grime. Handrails were loose and many clips were missing or broken. All of these issues were addressed. I have completed the work, and Brent has asked me to post before and after photos of the loco, to which I agreed.

Enjoy

Gandy

PS: She runs like a dream! Very smooth!

Gandy, very nice job.  That's the best kind of restoration, IMO, keeping what you can and renewing the rest - especially when it has family value.  Fine work.

Love your red one too, Joe.  In a fire?  Yikes!  Don't think I've ever seen a 408 in red, it makes an imposing engine.  Beautiful work.

Did either of you add weights on the frame under the cab?

A red 408E has not been made. The engine I restored was a MTH model. I figured since it was a reproduction and since it was burned up anyway I would paint it a different color. I didn't add any weights to this engine. I actually removed all the original weights since this is just a static display. The motors, wiring and boards were destroyed in the fire.

Nice job Joe. I did a 264E that was well cooked in a fire. It came out beautifully. I think Lionel made a red or pink color sample at some point in the 1920's. A dark green crackle, and a mustard one too.

I did not find any extra weights in this original. The pilots were heavy cast pieces and seemed to give the loco a good bit of weight.

The 408E pictures are great but to hold that bad boy and take a good look , YOU DID A SUPER, GREAT JOB! John could not be happier.  We are going to a Train Show Saturday in Plano TX., looking for track, it would not surprise if John did not leave with a few more train items.

Again, thank you for your efforts on the 408E

Brent,

I will also be attending the Plano TX train show as will another SGMA member Scott Schweyher.

I live in Arkansas and will be driving down Saturday but Scott lives in Dallas area and will be with the Lionel group running both O gauge and Standard Gauge trains on their club layout.  You should stop by and say 'Hi' to him and ask him about joining SGMA.

Need SG track?  Kirk Lindvig is the President of SGMA and the owner of USA Track, which universally is considered the best SG track you can order.  It's a fun group both nationally and regionally.  For example, dispite the ice storm, the regional Mid America Chapter of SGMA had a blast at the OKC train show running our Standard Gauge tinplate trains on our small but impressive SGMA layout!  Many said SGMA was "the hit" of the show!  Hopefully we'll be doing the Plano show in the future.

Brent,

I didn't see any acceptable Standard Gauge track for sale at the Plano show only a few rusty pieces.  If you still need SG track check out and order the best SG track available from USA Track LLC on their website at:

http://www.standardgaugetrack.com/

If you already know what you want, contact them with your order at:
