I have replaced some of my Lionel O-22 switches with the newer versions # 5132/33.

Some of these 5132/33 switches have a screw in bulb and some have a bayonet base bulb.

Which ones are the newer switches?  Or did Lionel just change from one style to another at a particular time in history?

Any help will be appreciated.

Larry,

The newer switches, the 5132, should have only one type of light bulb base, most likely the bayonet style. It is possible that somebody switched out the motor & solenoid assemblies on the 5132 with older 022 assemblies.

One thing that got me away from the 5132 series switch is one of the wires would burn out inside causing a short circuit, easy fix if you find it before it burns up with a post war ZW for power. The color of the wire that burnt up on me was yellow.

The older post war 022 switches can have either as the bayonet style was the newer model.

The bayonet bases work better than the screw in bases in that the bulbs in the bayonet bases to not come lose due to vibration.  In my thread 022/711 switch operating pblms I suggest that you should gently squeeze the screw in bases to create enough friction to keep the bulb tight.  Be gentle as the brass screw base is somewhat fragile.

Some of the new bulbs I bought were too long to fit into the bayonet bases.  Using a soldering iron, I removed some of the solder on the tip of the bulb so the bulb would go into the base.
