My friend is thinking about selling his Lionel Legacy LionMaster Big Boy and asked me to give it a once over. See the video below.

The smoke unit was initially working then suddenly stopped. When I opened the locomotive to check the smoke unit, this component fell out near the smoke unit.

I assuming this came off the smoke unit and this is why it stopped functioning.  Am I correct?

I went on Lionel's website but the smoke unit is unavailable. Is there a unit I can use as a replacement that will drop right in? Thanks.

From the looks of the contacts, I would not recommend trying to solder this one back on!

This is a pretty common size capacitor, if you find where one goes, drop me a line and I can send you a couple.

There's no certainty that this would return it to operation, that cap looks like a lot of oxidation occurred on the leads, I suspect either the flux didn't get cleaned during manufacturing, or something has contaminated the board.

The smoke unit wouldn't have such a cap, but the board Marty posted does indeed have that cap on it.

The board Marty posted is from a vision line big boy.

Joes test subject is a Lionmaster bigboy with the first gen Legacy electronics.

These engines also came with the 6ohm resistor in the smoke unit,  as well as the AC regulator that dies because of the overtaxing.

You're right, that's what I get for not looking up the product number!  That also explains why the leads look like they do!  It did indeed come from the smoke unit.

The cap can be replaced, and as mentioned, the 6 ohm resistor should be swapped for an 8 ohm resistor, the regulators are not available, so you want to baby the one you have!

Thanks Rick.  I should have done a better job paying attention.
