The tender that came with the engine needs to have a different railroads module then the terrible one it came with. Plus since the tender has no electrical pickups its tethered from the engine to get power. I want to eliminate the wire tether and have stand alone rail sounds device.  What are others thought about it?

You could do an ERR Railsounds kit. You’ll have to fabricate some pick up rollers on the tender trucks to accomplish a true stand alone tender, and eliminate any kind of tether.

Don’t forget some of these engines in that time era had plastic wheel bearings and he would need to put some type of pickups direct to the axles.

Another issue is the conversion from a dummy scale coupler on the rear of the tender can be switched to an operating one. Once mounted it , it sticks out very long. ugly design  I need to change that for a shorter one

Are you sure you’ve mounted the crab claw coupler in the right place Bob? …..the crab claw mounts to the truck, not where the scale coupler goes …

Lionel should still have the ground straps from the gold plated Hudson from 2000 on their parts site, but a better idea might be replacing one of the whole trucks. Trainz has one of the whole truck assemblies (28062-T90) available so you can have a ground AND third rail pickup roller added in one swap, and it's only $24.00.
