Just picked up pretty much a first generation lionel 6-18961 ERIE PA-1 for a song and a dance it has TMCC and signal sounds. I know signal sounds ain't the greatest thing since sliced bread but I was just wondering if anyone has one and how they like it.

I had the same loco. It's basically bell and horn. Not bad, but a little boring. They made an Erie PB unit with full railsounds and electro-coupler to go with it. Which sounds great, but the Erie never had a PB. Lionel would have helped all of us out by releasing the PA with full railsounds, as it was originally advertised, and releasing a dummy PA. That would have been more prototypical and I would have been more likely to keep my Erie units.

As Fred alluded to above, Lionel issued full Railsounds "B" units to compliment these PA units. I have the 18952/18953 AT&SF units. When you pair the SignalSounds with the Railsounds, I believe you get a killer sound package that will really fill your train room with some awesome horn doppler effects. These earlier sound packages (RS2.5???) really had some amplification behind them and will really put out some decibels if you want.
Can you swap out the signal sound for railsounds boards like the ones from electric railroad. Or is that impossible
Jack: Nothing is impossible here-just takes some money. I converted my 18107 D&RGW PA/PB/PA set to Electric Railroad components some years back when I wanted to have them run in a Command environment.
Call ERR and ask what they recommend; shouldn't be too hard to add ERR Railsounds to your engine.
Thanks D&H65 I believe I'll look into that.
