HELP!!! Just acquired the tugboat (New in box old stock) Open and it sure looked new wrapping etc. Began set up operation yesterday and today to fail. The unit has two potential power sources, Batteryoes anyone have recommendations operation that provides limited operation lights etc. At least this I got to work. AC operation provides lights, smoke unit, harbor sounds and whistle. I initially hooked up small  lionel transformer. Instructions worn of using more than 18 volts as it may destroy sound board. Out of concern as to this I checked and transformer unit is rated as max 18v. Tried numerous times generally short of full setting. Failure. Checked directions and found a hidden switch in aft deck must be switched to either AC/Off/DC Battery. As stated DC switch worked with batteries. Removed batteries for the ac test again with no success. Not sure if the original transformer and not wanting to damage unit I switch to new MTH transformer that displays voltage/watts connected and ran several more tests at 17v no success. The additional smoke/whistle switch has been re-connected several times. Don't believe I can return unit to vendor . Wanted to present to grandson for his birthday....now just a pretty piece of plastic. I've ruled out transformers used, insured wiring from Trans to unit solid. Again Battery limited operation works. Concerned that switch between AC/off/DC battery may be defective. I am at wits end and would appreciate any input. Does any one have recommendation or experience with this accessory. look forward to your help

Did you check the control box for the smoke/whistle? You may have to press the whistle button for an extended amount of time to 'start-up' the sounds on the tug...

"Press and hold the WHISTLE button on the controller (see Figure 6), and the Tugboat’s start-up sounds will play. After you release the button, you will hear the sounds of the Tugboat’s engine running and random marker buoy, foghorn, whistle and seagull sounds.

Press the WHISTLE button, at any time, and the whistle sounds will play. To turn off the sounds, press and hold the WHISTLE button for a few seconds. Slide the switch (disguised as the Tugboat’s bitt) at the back of the Tugboat to the left fortransformer or track power. See Figure 8 for the location of the switch. Slide the switch to the right for battery power. Only the lights inside the Tugboat will illuminate when under battery power.

The harbor sounds are operational when the Tugboat is powered by the AC power supply or wall pack. Press WHISTLE on the controller to blow the whistle. AC Power users, slide the SMOKE UNIT switch to ON to operate the smoke unit. The smoke feature will not operate on battery power."

Thanks Dave. Have several questions. Before using whistle button, should the interior and running lights be on if the transformer is properly connected and switched to AC operation.  Should batteries be left in position perhaps to insure complete circuit.  If the use of the whistle button does not initiate the required action ,sound and whistle, is there any other diagnostic checks that can be made??. Will attempt additional effort tomorrow and appreciate you input

If your operating the tug via transformer, there's no need for batteries, in either AC or DC mode. The battery set up was if you were using it as a desktop display. If you have it properly connected, the running lights and all illumination will be on. I have mine, plus other accessories working off a power block, that is connected to a 135W/18V brick. The switch should be in AC mode for the controller to fire up the sounds/smoke. If you have no success with the stock controller, you can try connecting a pushbutton activator and connect to the sounds terminal and see if that fire up the sounds. For smoke, you need an on/off switch.

These accessories were pretty solid. I've had my Pennsy tug since new and have experienced no issues.
