I recently installed a Super Chuffer II in my Sons EM-1. This is the third Super Chuffer II that I have installed. I was working great for a short time. Then the locomotive made a weird electronic clunking sound, and it stopped smoking. I assume the sound was coming from the Super Chuffer II board. Tried all the usual, resetting the locomotive. And made sure the smoke was on in the Cab I remote. Powered it back up, and it worked great again for a short time. Now with the volume turned down, you can hear the smoke unit motor turn on and off with the chuffing, but there is no smoke. This was built with a brand new smoke motor housing, new smoke unit board. Which was drilled out to a 1/4 inch hole, with a new 20 ohm smoke resistor. And new batting and smoke fluid. I was using Lionel smoke fluid in it when I put it together. My Son used Mega Steam smoke fluid after that. I have not taken it back apart yet. Has anyone ever had their Super Chuffer II malfunction in this way. Thank you

The motor is controlled by the Super-Chuffer, however the Super-Chuffer has no role in powering the smoke heater. If the smoke motor is running with the chuff, the Super-Chuffer is working as intended. The only connection to the smoke heater for the Super-Chuffer is an input to indicate to the Super-Chuffer that the smoke unit is on. Considering the fan is running, that sounds like the smoke unit is getting power to the heater.
Here's a typical wiring diagram for the Super-Chuffer and Chuff-Generator.

Ok John thanks for responding. I will have to take it back apart, and see what is going on.
I inspected the locomotive, and as gunrunnerjohn said the Super Chuffer is working. The smoke fluid was pooled up in the smoke stack. I cleared the smoke fluid pool in the stack, and it started to smoke again, but not like it was. I took it back apart and the batting had about a 1/4 in circle burnt hardened crispy black. And the 20 0hm smoke resistor had black burnt residue on it, which is not normal. They are always a little burnt, but not crispy black and hardened. I used regular Lionel fluid in it, when I put it together. My Son used Lionel premium smoke fluid, and Megs Steam pine scent. Is it possible that mixing multiple kinds of smoke fluid caused the burning ? I replaced the batting, cleaned the 20 ohm smoke resistor. And added regular Lionel smoke fluid in it. We tested it briefly, and it was working properly again. I asked my Son to use the reagular smoke fluid for a week, and see if it continues to function properly. Any thoughts on the matter would be appreciated. Thank you
I am not a big fan of using Mega Steam in command equipped locomotives……I’ve seen too many modern command locomotives with wrecked smoke units because of it,…..I know there’s a huge group that’s gonna cry blasphemy, but it is what is in what I’m seeing,……I just recently had to rebuild a very expensive smoke unit in a very expensive model, and what I found with Mega Steam was extensive charring, goopy looking residue, and a big ol mess,……if it were just one engine, ok, but repeated failures with using the same product, and something’s up,….Mega Steam works awesome in old postwar pellet type puffer units, and conventional engines where voltages vary greatly and don’t reach the nuclear reactor temps that modern command engines can,……I’d leave the Mega Steam for the antiques, and run nothing but Lionel Premium, or MTH fluids designed for modern command systems,…….that’s my .02 cents ……I’m sure others are gonna poke holes in this, but clearly, you’re witnessing something going astray,……

Truthfully, I use Megasteam exclusively, and I've not had any unusual issues with smoke units I'll have to present an opposing viewpoint. Most of my customers also use Megasteam successfully.

And that’s fine, like I said, “I’m not a fan of it “ ……I know the shells are gonna rain down, but that’s my observations, and what I’ve run across,…..if folks are good with it, and it works for them, then have a ball,……😁
