I have this engine and I can't remove the shell, I removed the screws that I think hold the shell on (the front and rear two on each end) but it doesn't move at all. The instructions don't say exactly where the screws are.

There should also be some in the middle of the shell somewhere (either 2 or 4 more). If you don't see any just inboard of either truck then you may need to remove the 4 screws holding the fuel tank/speaker to expose a couple hiding there.

I saw two on near the trucks. I'll try removing them too.
The other screws look to be connected to the smoke unit. I saw gold when I removed one of them. I'm lost for now.

Grab that camera again and shoot some more pics of the front truck area and rear including the frame. I should be able to point them out. We will get you inside there soon.
Heres some photos.

The older version of the DASH8 has two screws under the tanks. Since the manuals are off-line at Lionel, I can't say if this new version has the same arrangement, but I suspect it's likely.

Take these two screws out, remove the tanks, and see if there are two body screws under the tanks.

I can't get them out. My screwdrivers don't fit them. Even so, it doesn't appear there are body screws are under there.

Have you looked under the fuel tank/speaker yet? That's where I would go next.

Yes I did. I think the middle two are shell screws?

Those two screws, and the similar ones on the rear, are the first ones to remove. I'd assumed you had already removed those four screws. I'm confused - you said in your opening statement that you'd removed the front and rear screws, but the pictures show them still in place.

I removed them when I posted this thread but put them back in so I didn't lose them as I'm working on a bunch of projects.
I got in the engine. I need to replace the headlight. Odd thing is, when I apply power, the headlight comes on for about 2 seconds and fades off. A loose wire?

Matt, before we even begin to tackle your headlight problem please come clean on what it took to finally remove the shell (the original post). Your learnings need to be shared so we don't have to go through 15 posts again next time somebody needs to get into another Dash 8.
I have to thank the folks above for the help in giving me guidance in what screws to remove. I haven't ran into very many engines that have screws under the fuel tank and kinda forgot that it was a thing. But I removed the screws with the red circles around them. After I removed the ones from the fuel tank, I left them out and put them in the box with the engine, I dont notice any change in leaving them out and it will be easier to remove the shell when I need to again. Thanks again everyone! Now, on to fixing the headlight.

Try Aux 2 Matt and see if the headlight comes back on.

Already did. No change. The rear light is acting up too. Either they both work or the don't.
If you have not reset the last loco since installling the cab then I recommend that.

Does this engine have spring contacts to connect the lighting circuits to the chassis? If so you might try re-installing the two screws you said above you left off. That might make a difference, especially if the contacts are in that end of the engine.

There is a plug that connects the lights. No spring terminals. All the connections on that plug are tight. I'll try putting the two screws back in.
I recently had a weird problem with lights on a Sd70. Rerogrammed r4lc without luck. The front light would not turn off . The six buttton worked. Replace reciever board

I just reprogrammed it with Aux 1, 6. No change. I'll replace the R4LC and see if that's fixes it. Did that fix your issue?
I meant to say the auz button would work. But, front light would not turn off with direction Change. R4 problem resolved

I changed it and it fixed the problem. Could the other one be fixed?
If the headlight turns off with AUX2, it's not the triac, and it's under control of the processor. That being the case, I can't imagine how it wouldn't work.
