I am checking the steam whistle effect for functionality on this unit.  It sounds off to me but it is a primitive whistle and may be correct.  It sounds more like bleating than a steam whistle.  The steam hissing/chugging sounds under operation sounds normal.  I am operating the item with a Lionel ZW transformer, pressing the whistle forward lever.  If you have the same unit, what does your steam whistle sound like?

Ed,

The electronic whistle in your engine is as 'good as it gets' until the advent of the digitial sound system era around 1988. On the circuit board in your engines' tender it has the later circuit board that has no adjusting pots. It is high pitched, but actually comes somewhat close to the whistle on Southern Pacific's Cab forward locomotives.

On postwar transformers, only operate the whistle control half way, they seem to work better that way, as the circuit board get a better operating voltage.
