Lionel 6-82183 Smoke Issue

Not much, it sounds like you followed the steps I would have taken before ordering the RCMC.

Thanks for confirming for me. I guess that's another $120 down the drain. I'll have to see if I can make myself wait until the 1/2 off parts sale.

I'd wait or find a friendly Lionel repair shop.

Here's the smoke drivers, probably the part that's failed.  However, finding the part seems a challenge, they don't come up in any parts search.  Best idea is find someone with a dead RCMC and lift the part, maybe you'll get lucky.

That would mean to me that the whistle unit is bad. Not the RCMC .

I can see where that statement might be a bit confusing, let me clarify. The whistle unit works fine when it's plugged into the whistle port on the RCMC. The stack works when it's plugged into the whistle port on the RCMC. Neither work when plugged into the stack port on the RCMC.
