Lionel 72-9305-250 Operating Stock Car - Legacy control

I'm a newbie at Legacy control but have v1.3 up and running with two diesels. Recently purchased the Lionel Operating Stock Car. First time on powered track under default ENG 1 everything seemed to work. After a number of attempts to assign a unique ID nothing works and cannot reset to original. Tried to follow reprogramming instructions in Owner's Manual to no avail. Can anyone offer help to get me back to the original and to get to a unique ID. Thanks.
