Here is attempt number 2 at converting a TMCC steam engine to 4 chuffs using JB Weld.  This was by far trickier than the 611 N&W because it seemed like the cherry switch was harder to get to...I don't think I had to remove the smoke unit on the 611; I had to on the 779.  Again, it's not 100% perfect, but it's close enough for me.  Next project is to update the mars light to the prototypical one that I purchased from a 2-railer.

Do you mind if I ask you how you were able to get this engine to smoke so much?  I really like my 38050.....but its smoke output is not very good.  I once read that the smoke unit wires were installed wrong at the factory but I have not followed up on this.

 

On a different note, would you agree with me if I said that the Lionel model is actually somewhat nicer than the MTH model of this locomotive...which is no slouch in its own right.  I really think Lionel deserved a little more credit on this model than it received.  (I wish the new Legacy NKP 765 was priced more in line with the newer MTH models at +/- $900.....but that is different story for a different day.)

I followed Mike Reagan's video below to get it to smoke a lot.  I did the same thing to my 611 and am planning to do the chuff conversion and smoke upgrade to the 28078.

 

I can't speak to the MTH version as all of my engines are either are Lionel or Williams, but of all of the Berkshires Lionel did, this one is my favorite.  For some reason, I just love mars lights!
