I was recently given an 8102 steam loco. It only runs in reverse, so I'd like to take the frame off and take a look at the e unit.
There is one screw on the top. What else do I need to unscrew ? The less, the better.

No E-unit on these, has a double-wound field & 2 position reverse unit. It it quiet or does it hum in the "forward" position?
This loco uses the basic MPC-era four wheel motor chassis. With some power applied to the track, definitely try fiddling with the switch on the top of the loco. If it still doesn't go forward, some reasons might be a dirty commutator, worn brushes, poor brush spring tension, and loose or broken wires.
To remove the body, there are other screws on the underside toward the front of the loco which retain a plate which anchors the front part of the chassis. You'll have to thread the rear truck assembly out from under the cab. These are not difficult locos to take apart. Go slowly, take photos if necessary, and make careful note of which screws came from where. Good luck!!
