This loco uses the basic MPC-era four wheel motor chassis.  With some power applied to the track, definitely try fiddling with the switch on the top of the loco.  If it still doesn't go forward, some reasons might be a dirty commutator, worn brushes, poor brush spring tension, and loose or broken wires.

To remove the body, there are other screws on the underside toward the front of the loco which retain a plate which anchors the front part of the chassis.   You'll have to thread the rear truck assembly out from under the cab.  These are not difficult locos to take apart.  Go slowly, take photos if necessary, and make careful note of which screws came from where.  Good luck!!
