I am finally getting around to swapping shells on an 8923 (I think) New Haven Alco Dummy with horn, and have a couple of questions about the chassis. Picture below.

1 - there is a large weight bolted to the frame just above the fuel tanks. The engine is so heavy, I am guessing this is a "field modification". Can anyone confirm that it is not factory.

2 - the front portion of the frame was bent down. Not just the tab, the whole rounded section.  I assume this was to hold the shell tight to the frame. The new cab has a narrower slot, so I had to straighten the frame to get the cab to fit.  Again, I am guessing that this is also a field modification, and am looking for confirmation.

Thanks in advance.

Seems logical that Lionel would use a straight frame, based on manufacturing ease and just plain old kludginess

Over the years, I've learned not to assume a whole lot, which is why I asked.

I was certain enough about the frame to straighten it before I asked. (The question on the frame was an afterthought)
I was guessing that the weight wasn't factory, being that it is overly heavy, not that neatly made and not that neatly mounted. But as Chuck and Geopeg point out, it is indeed a factory part.

The horn does not sound very good to me. It's electronic, but I think the postwar bicycle horns sound better.
