I bought a used Lionel 990 Legacy system for my son. How can I tell what version is installed on it. And should I do a factory reset on it before using it on his layout.

The first part is easy… if you plug in the base and power up the Cab2 (by pushing the small square red button on the upper right of the Cab2), the screen should come up with the info on last engine that was run with the remote. Press the red button again and a screen will come up that gives you the system info - base version, Cab version, and what channel the base is set to. Someone more technically adept will need to address the reset question. Hope this helps.
Push the same Red button and use the red knob to scroll to the page that clears the data base. Once there clear it and it will remove all the previous information.
