Earlier this summer I purchased a used Alco PA-1 AA set (D&H 6-14574). The original owner said that the sounds were intermittent, but I took the chance (the set was priced well and looked great!). The owner also said they might require servicing.
During the week I serviced the set, installed new traction tires and gave them a test run. After some initial studdering, the powered unit has run great (the Odessy studder others have mentioned?). All commands work. The RailSounds has not missed a beat (yet). But, the volume does not seem to be all that loud. I will say it is loud enough for me, but just seems to have a lower volume than other products I have heard. The volume pot on the unit is turned all the way up and I set the volume all the way up on my CAB 1. At this point, I pick up some static from the speaker. Can anyone verify that this is normal or needs to looked at by a service center?
The only obvious things I found during the servicing: very dirty wheels and pickup rollers, old grease, etc. On the powered A unit - the pickup rollers where very sticky. I removed them and placed them in a small cup of rubbing alcohol, which quickly freed them up and then just touched them with some electrical lube.
I removed and reseated each board at the main board and looked for any obvious wire damage. There were no damaged pins. The boards reseated easily. And, I cound not find any damaged wiring. I did not remove the main board. Both of the small fan motors operate quietly. These are the ones that blow air onto the roof mounted cooling fans. The powered A unit fan assembly, however does not want to turn when the small motor is operating. It seems to turn freely if I use canned air on it (lightly). Any suggestions?
Lastly, the owner also stated that he never used the smoke units. While performing the serving, I did pop the tops on both smoke units. They both look like they have never been used. The switch on both units was, and still are, turned off. I will test them later.
Overall, I am very happy with the units and would like to get input from anyone who has experience with Lionel's Alco PA-1's.
