The ribbon-like device is a hybrid roller-coaster, monorail. The "track" sections (I don't recall the lengths) are flexible plastic which can be bent to whatever shape you desire. It uses a clamp system to affix the track to anything you may have handy for support. I was told that it could also be built-up from the floor. The display layout was supported by custom-made plastic tubes. The cars themselves a driven by two horizontal rubber tires that come out from the bottom of the vehicle and squeeze the track on each side. Power is supplied by a rechargeable battery pack that is connected to the motor via a quick disconnect system. Recharging is accomplished using a barrel port in the side of the car. The shells snap on to the chassis and can be swapped out. Running time per charge is under 1/2 hour. The cars are also equipped with hooks front and rear to create a "lash-up". I was told that there is a problem with the powered unit pulling the dummy cars and that it is still a work in progress.
Thanks to the folks at Lionel for giving me the rundown on the system.
