I was in town for the NASCAR race and got some time to go to Concord Mills Mall. The mall is HUGE, I knew that I lived nearby when it was built. But it took us 20 minutes to find a parking spot it was so busy. Mall was packed. My son wanted to stop at LEGO store. Then around the corner to Lionel store. Store is just off the food court. It was great looking from the outside and pretty well packed with folks.  Three layouts running. There were a few things I enjoyed looking at but I didn't buy as we were on the way to the race.

We didn't like this bigger store more than the old small one at the warehouse. They have kinda moved upscale (pun intended) and have somewhat changed the inventory. The new store is nice....but my son was looking for the area the old store had where they had close out stuff. Not at the mall!!  They had also gotten rid of some of the NASCAR items they sold at the warehouse store. So while overall the mall store is a great showplace.....not as good as the old hole in the wall place. I didn't see a lot of sale either....one guys was asking where the 'N' scale stuff was!!

I hope it works for them....but for die hard train guy just 'OK'.

Would not be smart to have close out items in a shop like that.  It would tell you to wait until things have aged out on the shelf before buying them.  One retailer that does that, (not with trains) is Macy's.  100% price the first two weeks.  20% off after that.  Then 50%.  If your wait, it will be priced less.  Why would Lionel undercut their product?

This seems terrific! What they don't make in direct profit they will make up for in good publicity and getting the name out. A lot of people don't realize Lionel is still out there, and a lot of people in the hobby don't realize how far Lionel has come technology and detail wise. We will never know if that was worth it from a monetary stand point, but anything to promote the hobby is great.
