lionel B&O 7812 intermittently failing to move

I have a B&O 7812 (6-38404). Lately when apply track power the engine sounds come on immediately and the loco won't move . There are times when I apply track power that it works fine but only for a short time-it will suddenly stop moving-engine sounds come on -and that's it=it's failed. I don't know what board controls this. Thanks for any help.
