Just received a Lionel BB1 and was wondering can this use a BCR or a Hi cap resistors in place of battery? Could I possibly use a rechargeable 9 volt battery? Thanks guys and gals, Joe

Lionel engines do not have a charging circuit in the engines. A rechargeable battery, while it will work in the engine, will not get charged. It will need to be removed and charged separately. If you are running the BB1 in command mode, you do not need the battery. The battery is only needed for conventional control to maintain the sounds when the direction button is pressed. In command mode, the power is never interrupted.
Only if you run conventional mode you may want to look at the bcr along with the charging circuit. The cost for the parts are approx $50.00 plus S&H.
You can simply roll your own as far as charging a BCR in a Lionel locomotive. I'd add a 22 ohm resistor between the diode and the BCR on this diagram, didn't get around to putting that in. It works this way, but the extra resistor limits the inrush current for initially charging the BCR.
